Sharing the joy of birds and nature is at the core of everything we do at Wild Birds Unlimited. We love playing an active role in our community by hosting bird walks, educational presentations, and other events. Check out what we have coming up and call the store for more details!

Sunday, June 30: "Pop Up" Bird Walk at Fish Creek Natural Area, Maplewood, 8:30 AM

Join us for a Sunday morning bird walk at Fish Creek Natural Area in nearby Maplewood, to see birds and wildflowers. Meet at 8:30AM at the trailhead at the end of Henry Lane.  Bring your own binoculars or borrow a pair of ours.  Most of the route is on boardwalks elevated above the bog.  The walk will take about an hour through rolling oak forest and prairie.  The walk is open to all ages and birding skill levels.  

July 3-4: 4th of July Birding Challenge

Find and record as many bird species as you can over the July 4th holiday that: 1) have "American" in their common name, or 2) have the name of a U.S. state in their  common name, or 3) are the official State Bird of a U.S. state.  Bring your list into the store and those with the most verifiable species recevie a free high-perch hummingbird feeder!  Submit your list by Monday, July 8 to be eligible.

Saturday, July 6: Bird and Paddle, Eagle Point Lake, Lake Elmo Park Reserve, 8AM

Bring your canoe or kayak and join us for a unique birding experience INSIDE Eagle Point Lake.  We'll look for loons, wood ducks, and trumpeter swans and their babies, young osprey learning to fish, herons, egrets, cormorants, and the many songbirds that catch insects at the water's edge.   We'll also see some June-blooming wildflowers and the butterflies they attract.  The walk is in hilly terrain that descends to the Mississippi River and includes a 100-foot climb to the top of the dunes on the way back.  We'll meet at the Eagle Point Lake trailhead 8AM and enjoy a quiet paddle for about an hour.  Please bring your own canoe or kayak, paddles, and personal flotation device.  Entrance fee to the park is $7.00 per vehicle unless you already have a Washington County annual park pass.

Saturday, July 20:  Build your own Butterfly House, 11 AM

Where do butterflies sleep?  In summer they roost overnight hiddden in tall grasses and wildflowers.  But when the weather turns cool in early fall, migrating butterflies like Monarchs will roost together in butterfly houses.  And butterflies like the Mourning Cloak will hibernate through the winter in a butterfly house.

Join us in the store to build your own butterfly house from a kit.  We supply the tools and guidance; you build and decorate the butterfly house to palce in your yard or garden.  The workshop is free and open to all ages, the cost of the butterfly house kit is $56.99.  Space is limited to 4 kits with 1-2 participants per kit.  Call us at 651-735-9755 or  stop by the store to sign up.

Saturday, July 27:  Mix Your own Seed Blend, 10AM - 4PM

Create your own seed blend for our Bird of the Month, the American Goldfinch and other small finches.  Come make your own seed blend and take home a bag of your own customized blend filled with ingredients your finches will love!  $5.00 per participant covers the cost of a bag of your seed blend and a small finchfeeder to take home.  Perfect as a gift for you and your finches, and a great way to learn about finches and the foods they eat.  Event will run from 10AM to 4PM while supplies of finch feeders last.
