Seasonal Update:

Who doesn’t love some extra cache?
Several of our local backyard birds like to “cache” (or hide) food supplies to help them survive winter. Black-capped Chickadees, nuthatches, titmice, and Blue Jays are a few of the well-known cachers, with some of them hiding 100+ seeds or nuts in a single day (wow!). Chickadees prefer black oil sunflower seeds; White-breasted Nuthatches favor sunflower seed with no shell; Blue Jays are particularly fond of peanuts in the shell. Birds typically cache in a natural location like the crevice under tree bark or in a brush pile, but some birds will even cache under the shingles on your roof or wedge it into the siding of your house. Consistently providing a wide variety of seed and nut options in your feeders can help birds build fat reserves, reduce their physiological stress, and helps maintain a healthy body condition as they prepare for winter.
