SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14 -- WASHINGTON COUNTY GUIDED BIRD WALK, PINE POINT REGIONAL PARK, 9:00-10:30 AM
Missing our bird walks now that wInter is here? Join one of Washington County Parks' monthly bird walks, held each month at a different Washington County park and guided by a park naturalist. For December the bird walk is at Pine Point Regional Park west of Stillwater near Carnelian Junction. Meet at the park entrance, located at 11900 Norell Ave. N. and have fun exploring the park and its winter birds.
SATURDAYS, DECEMBER 14 & 21 -- MAKE YOUR OWN PINECONE CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT FOR THE BIRDS, WILD BIRDS UNLIMMITED OF WOODBURY, 10AM - 2PM
Join us in the store for a fun holiday activity for all ages that will benefit the birds! Make a pinecone ornament for your birds with Bark Butter and bird seed! We'll have large white pine cones, plenty of bark butter, and of course lots of bird seed to sprinkle on top. Makes a great gift for your birds and your favorite bird watcher. No sign up needed, just drop by anytime between 10 and 2 and make one or several oof your own ornaments, then take them home, hang them outsdide, and watch the birds enjoy them. Cost is $2.00 per pine cone ornament, limit five per family.
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 21 -- WINTER BIRD WALK AT FISH CREEK NATURAL AREA, MAPLEWOOD, 9AM - 10:30 AM
Want to see how active birds can be in winter? Join us at Fish Creek Natural Area in Maplewood for a walk in the woods with the birds. Fish Creek Natural Area is situated on a high bluff above the Mississippi River and its wooded ravines and rolling prairie "bowl" provide proection for birds from winter cold and wind, as well as ample food in the oak woodlands. Expect to see all of our common backyard birds in their natural settings, including five species of woodpecler, plus wild turkeys, raptors, possibly overwintering bluebirds, and more. We'll meet at the trailhead at the end of Henry Lane (the entrance road to the park; in Google Maps, just search for "Fish Creek Natural Area Entrance" which will bring you to Henry Lane, just off Carver Ave on the west side of I-494. Park in the gravel areas on the side of Henry Road. The trails we'll be walking on are paved but are not plowed in winter, so if snow is deep on the ground, it might be helpful to bring your snowshoes.
DECEMBER 14 - JANUARY 5 -- 125th ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT
Birders of all experience levels can join the oldest and longest running citizen science program in the country, the annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC), started on Christmas Day in 1900 and now in its 125th year. The CBC utilizes teams of volunteer birders to count every bird observed in a 15-mile diameter circle during a 24-hour hours period betweem Dec 14 and January 5 each year.
