April Local Store and Community Events

Sharing the joy of birds and nature is at the core of everything we do at Wild Birds Unlimited. We love playing an active role in our community by hosting bird walks, educational presentations, and other events. Check out what we have coming up and call the store for more details!

Sunday, April 1 – Prairie’s Edge Wildlife Loop at Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge Opens for the Season. Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge near Zimmerman, MN is the premier place in our area to see sandhill cranes from April through October and there’s no better place to see them than the Prairie’s Edge Wildlife Loop. You may also see trumpeter swans, red-headed woodpeckers, bald eagles, and tons of songbirds. The loop takes about an hour to drive, or 2-3 hours to bike. It changes almost weekly from spring to fall, with migrating birds, waves of wildflowers, and wonderful fall colors.

Sunday, April 6, 8:45-10:30 AM – First Spring Bird Walk, Afton State Park. Meet at the Visitor Center just off the main parking lot, and we'll make a loop through the prairie and then down the main trail to the St. Croix River. We'll look for early migratory birds like Meadowlarks, Phoebes, Osprey, Bluebirds, Kingfishers, Sapsuckers, shorebirds and more.

Saturday, April 12, 5AM – 7AM – Annual Midwest Crane Count. Want to contribute to the regional knowledge about where sandhill cranes nest and how many there are? Participate in the Annual Midwest Crane Count and count them at sunrise on April 12. If you’d like to participate, let us know and we’ll get you connected with your county’s coordinator or visit https://savingcranes.org/annual-midwest-crane-count/

Monday, April 14 – Time to get your hummingbird and oriole feeders out! The first wave of hummers and orioles could arrive by the last week in April, and any early birds could arrive sooner than that. Put this date on your calendar and dust off those feeders!

Friday, April 25 – Arbor Day – Plant a Tree for the Birds! Ask us for recommendations or check out our helpful reference guides in the store.

Saturday, April 26, 9AM – 5PM – 2025 Bluebird Expo, Red Wing High School, 2451 Eagle Ridge Dr., Red Wing, MN – All-day expo on one of our most endearing local birds, hosted by the Bluebird Recovery Program of MN. Sunday, April 27, 8:30-10AM - Second Spring Bird Walk, Carver Lake Park, 3175 Century Ave., S., Woodbury. Hummingbirds, Orioles and Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks should be arriving in our area, so let’s seek them out.
