New Feeder? New Seed? Here's What to Do & What to Expect
Most songbirds find their food by sight, not by smell. They have to "discover" the new feeder you put out, or the different looking seed you have put in their feeder. This could take 2 - 4 weeks on average, sometimes less, sometimes more. Having more natural habitat for birds in your yard or nearby often helps bring the birds to your feeders sooner. Follow these simple steps for success:
- Put only a small amount of food in the feeder until the birds start eating it regularly.
- If the seed gets wet and goes uneaten for three days or more, dump it out and start over. Birds will eat wet seed, but they will not eat moldy seed, and they can see mold before we can.
- If changing seed to something that looks different, try mixing some of your old seed with the new seed to make this transition easier.
- If adding suet or bark butter, try roughing up the surface with a fork so it isn't flat. Try pressing some seed into the surface. They may recognize the seed and discover the suet.
- Mostly BE PATIENT! Keep fresh, dry seed available and they will eventually come!
